Grass is growing long, but it's for a reason

It’s that time of year when the Los Lagos Vistas turf sheds its feathers as the desert transitions from summer to winter.

The first steps have been visible, as new winter rye grass is popping up all over, a big contrast to the low-cut just a few weeks ago.

The low-cut grass, called scalping, plus removing dead grass and debris and aerating the soil has improved water flow to grass roots and stimulated a lot of green growth.

Letting the grass grow long right after seeding helps establish grass roots and a firm root base to keep grass healthy. Mowing will start this week to tame the wildness.

The Maintenance Team also applied a gypsum-based product to help break down soil compaction. The gypsum also dissolves fertilizer and other residues that compact over time and seal off the soil. The new procedures are the result of a free consultation from the Lake Havasu City Parks Department head, Guy Reynolds.

Reynolds also suggested revamping slope areas to remove grass and create rock and stone barriers at the top of slopes to block water run-off.

Reynolds lauded the Los Lagos Vistas Maintenance Team on turf condition and the HOA’s movement toward more rock scaping. Some of his recommendations include expanding mulching under trees and designing out specific areas to balance rock scaping and turf and improve water conservation.
